February Birthstone - Amethyst

February Birthstone Amethyst Jewellery

Amethyst is a variety of quartz, and is one of the world’s most popular gemstones due to its spectacular deep purple colour and affordability. Its name is derived from the Ancient Greek words  (meaning ‘not’) and méthystos (meaning ‘intoxicated’), as they believed amethyst stones gave the owner protection against drunkenness. Amethyst forms inside geodes and in alluvial deposits, in either crystalline or massive forms. It is found in abundance in countries such as Brazil, as well as Uruguay, Sri Lanka, Siberia, Canada, India, Bolivia, and Argentina and some African countries.

Amethyst is available in a variety of hues, ranging from deep royal purple, light lilac, lavender and mauve. The most desired shade of amethyst has a primary purple hue of around 75–80%, with 15–20% blue and red secondary hue. Heating can remove unwanted brownish inclusions, and lighten overly dark hues. Amethyst commonly shows colour zoning, meaning an uneven distribution of colour within the gemstone.

Carat Weight

Amethyst is popular as a large centre stone in jewellery designs, since the price per carat does not rise dramatically with a larger size gemstone.
