Ruby is one of the most highly prized gemstones, due to its intense colour and rarity. It is a variety of the mineral corundum, and its name is derived from the Latin word ‘ruber‘ meaning ‘red’. In the middle ages, rubies were thought to bring good health and cure bleeding.
It is thought that rubies are formed under intense heat a pressure by tectonic plates smashing together. They are mined in Thailand, Cambodia, Burma, India, Afghanistan, Australia, Namibia, Colombia, Japan, Scotland, Brazil and in Pakistan, with Burma’s Mogok mines producing the most valuable rubies. One of the world’s largest rubies is the Sunrise Ruby – the most expensive at 30 million USD. It is 25.6-carats and weight 5.1g!
A ruby’s weight is measured in carats. 5 carats = 1 gram. All other criteria being equal, the greater the carat weight, the rarer the ruby and therefore greater its value. Untreated rubies are also more valuable than treated stones.
Ruby gemstones vary in colour, ranging from brownish-purpleish shades to orange and pinkish. The most sought after colour is a vivid medium to dark red, often referred to as ‘pigeon blood’. Some rubies display a silky shine, called ‘silk’ of the ruby. This phenomenon is caused by very fine needles of the mineral rutile.
Most rubies are heat treated to improve their colour by removing a purple or blue tinge. Lead glass may also be used to fill in small cracks.
