June Birthstone - Pearl

June Birtstone Pearl Jewellery UKPearl has long been highly prized, due to its iridescent beauty and rarity. Its name is derived from the Old French word ‘perle‘ meaning leg, as the shells in which pearls form have a shape similar to a leg of meat.

Natural pearls are formed by chance in nature, when the mantle of an oyster is damaged. In response, the mantle tissue of the mollusk secretes nacre (mother of pearl) into the pearl sac, a cyst that forms during the healing process. The largest known natural pearl in the world is known as Pearl of Lao Tze. It measures 24 centimeters in diameter and weighs 6.4 kilograms, and was found by a diver in the Palawan Sea, Philippines. It is valued at an estimated $35,000,000!

Nowadays, cultured pearls (also known as farmed pearls) make up the majority of pearls used in jewellery making. They are formed by inserting graft tissue from a donor oyster nucleus into a mollusk. The mollusk reacts by secreting nacre, a lustrous substance that builds up in layers around the nucleus, forming the pearl.

Colour

Pearls vary in colour, ranging from iridescent pinks, whites, silver, gray, yellow, brown or golds. The color of the pearl depends very much on the species of mollusk that produced it, and its environment. Treatments can be used to change the colour of pearls – irradiation darkens pearls and can enhance their iridescence, whilst dyes can be used to tint to any colour desired.

Carat Weight

Generally, the larger the pearl, the more valuable it is. Pearls come in a variety of different shapes and sizes, including round, oval, baroque, drop and ringed.

Brian Fulton Pearl Jewellery

Pearls are a traditional gift to give to a bride on her wedding day. This originates from the Ancient Greeks, who associated pearls with love, marriage and unrivaled beauty. The Greeks also believed the pearl would promote marital harmony and prevent newlywed brides from crying. The current collection has many pearl jewellery pieces to choose from, please see below.
