The aquamarine gemstone is a variation of the mineral beryl, which sports a dazzling, green-blue to blue colour. Its name is derived from the Latin words ‘aqua’ (meaning ‘water’) and ‘marina’ (meaning ‘of the sea’), and it was believed to protect sailors from drowning, seasickness and guarantee a safe voyage.
Aquamarine is formed inside rocks called pegamites, and is mined mainly in Brazil, Africa, India and Russia, but also is found in Nigeria, Madagascar, Zambia, Pakistan, USA and Mozambique. The biggest aquamarine ever mined was found near the city of Marambaia, Minas Gerais, Brazil, in 1910. It weighed over 110.5 kg.
Aquamarine gems can be found in a wide range of blue tones, such as light-blue, dark-blue, blue-green and green-blue. A deeply saturated blue is the most desirable color, but it is very rare in larger stones. The colour of aquamarine can be enhanced with heat treatments, which can be used to get rid of unwanted green and yellowish tones and lighten overly dark gemstones to a more favorable blue.
The size of aquamarine gems vary from very small to very large. While large stones are readily available, it’s difficult to use them in jewellery, so there’s less demand for them, except as centre stones. As a result, per-carat prices tend to decrease for sizes above 25 carats.
